Year 5 Age and the Elderly diversity focus

Date: 17th Feb 2023 @ 4:00pm

Today has been diversity day across school. Year 5 have looked at getting old and the affects it has on us. We also discussed how looing after elderly people is important and what amazing stories and things they have done through their lives.

We started the day by looking at 'The Grey years' - we looked at what life may be like for an elderly person today and some of the physical limitations they may face.

We then wrote lettters to an elderly person at our local care home which where delivered in the afternoon for them to read. After our morning break we then looked at

Protecting our future – when had a financial understanding of how a pension works and how an elderly person may cope with less income.

This afternoon we had a visit from 5 elderly visitors from our Local Care home, they had a great time and even cried when they had to go home as they really enjoyed being with us and said how amazing we all are. They are the amazing ones! We did a question and asnwer session about what life has bee like growing up and what is the same and different over their lifetimes. Wigan has changed a lot! to finish the afternoon we had a game of bingo and our guests stayed for tea nad biscuits with us. They took our letters back and we hope to get replies from some of them very soon. We may even become penpals.

We have had a great, fun and enjoyable day and learned so much about getting older.
